Reflective Story

“Knowing good and evil”

This particular day would not be like any other. All the boys and girls in the neighborhood would be attending the party that Lusar was organizing to celebrate his birthday.

He thought the party would be an excellent opportunity to make acquaintances, as he had recently moved and had little time to do so. Therefore, it was time for the meeting.

He started receiving visits from people who would soon become his new companions. Manakel, a friendly, good-natured young man who enjoyed everyone’s sympathy and whose reputation as a glutton preceded him, was one of them. He met Lusar in the following way:

—Manakel is a good boy, but you have to be careful with him because he consumes as much as he can digest.

Manakel’s body proved to Lusar that he was not exaggerating, for obesity is not achieved by eating air. Manakel joined in his jokes, but internally he was fighting hard battles despite his actions.

His conscience warned him that if he ate too much, his body would not be able to cope, and he would end up with indigestion and become ill.

That was the voice of his conscience, but his instincts also had something to tell him. God, oh God! It was exclaiming how delicious everything was, luring him to succumb to the desire to keep eating.

The pain Manakel was going through was no doubt unknown to any of his companions.

Nothing was missing from the feast. Everything was delicious and there was plenty of food. Manakel, who once gave in to his instincts and binged on food out of anxiety, thought it was so.

When it was all over because it was getting a bit late, everyone went home. However, not everyone did. Manakel didn’t dare go home because he felt so bad about what he had said. He longed for solitude.

He was unable to spread the self-hatred he felt against others. His stomach burned with a fierce fire and his chest filled with powerful aggression.

My God, he felt terrible. No doubt he was being punished by God for disobeying him, for he was now passing away. He had to go home, for he did not want to die without saying goodbye to his family.

In truth, he was not dying and God was not punishing him; he just felt so bad for ignoring the voice in his head telling him what was wrong that he wished he had died to silence it.

When he was reunited with his family when he got home, he began to feel a little better. She couldn’t even look her parents in the eye because of her extreme embarrassment, so she decided to retire to bed.

She looked for a solution to her problem while she slept, but time was running out, and she could not rest. In addition, he found it difficult to fall asleep because of his guilt, which prevented him from feeling at peace with himself.

He stayed awake all night, and when dawn finally came, exhaustion got the better of him, and he fell asleep. However, he could not find serenity even in this realm, for he experienced a terrifying nightmare. When he met God, God was bitterly displeased with him and declared to him:

—I see that you have abandoned the information I gave you. You are aware of good and evil, but you act arbitrarily against it. If you repeat it,

Manakel stood up suddenly, shocked and sweating. God’s fury was terrifying. He could not let him down. The young man would never forget that dream, and since then he had learned to silence the voice of his instincts and always be guided by the voice of his conscience. He could now distinguish between good and evil.
