“The Superb Magician”
Young Nith-Haiah had been residing among the sages and magicians of the Great Temple of the Mysteries for twelve long years.
He had to travel a difficult path to enter the services of one of the seven Masters as an apprentice, but once there, his passion for study helped him quickly earn the respect and love of his teachers.
After four years of arduous study, the young seeker had mastered the most valuable secrets and his desire to impart them to others was so great that he often set aside basic principles of behavior.
“Never forget that you must always act selflessly and, above all, with humility when you use your power in the outer world to help those in need.”
These were the words of his Master, who observed how his pupil had forgotten the essentials in his haste to learn magic and transform the world.
The day Nith-Haiah had been waiting for finally arrived. He entered as an inexperienced apprentice and left as an expert Master. He had the choice of continuing to serve as a master in the Temple or leaving to unravel mysteries elsewhere. And he went with the latter.
Already he had departed. His only luggage was a bag in which he kept some medicinal creams. And that was all. He didn’t need anything else because he was welcomed and cared for by the High Priests in every community he traveled through.
Because of the energy that animated him, he did not have to travel far to find the neighborhood of a poor community. He thought about how to ambush them with his magic as he approached. He needed to get their sympathy as soon as possible by introducing himself.
As a result, he had the idea to summon the forces of nature, the elves to create the winds, the salamanders to summon the wrath of thunder and the undines to make their waters fall to the ground.
Nith-Haiah had needlessly unleashed a storm. The people, who could not believe their eyes, condemned the weather for ruining their crops and presaging tragedy and famine for the coming year.
The inexperienced magician was horrified to see all the damage he had caused and regretted his actions as he thought of his Master’s teachings:
—If there is no humility in your actions, do not use your power.
And the magician realized that he had acted arrogantly and that he had to make amends for all his actions.
So the magician summoned the gnomes, the spirits of the earth and asked for their help to bring order to the fields without anyone noticing. So, they acted. From that day on, the authority of the Master was always used for just reasons.
