—What fear so deeply stuns your heart? What fear so intensely torments your spirit?
The young man tried to avoid answering that question without saying anything, but he ran out of time when the old man called his attention again:
—If death is as necessary as life, why do you fear it?
How could the old man know that Jalon’s main concern was his impending death? Jalon was astonished.
—Look at that fruit; it will soon fall to the ground and fall off the branch,— the old man added.
—It will have passed away for the tree, but inside it contains a seed which, when it comes in contact with the earth, will sprout a new tree that will bear new fruit.
With these statements, a complex enigma was revealed to Jalon.
From that day on, he was not afraid to die, for he knew that it would eventually happen and that, when it did, he would be able to release the seed that would eventually give rise to the beginning of a new life.
